THROUGH THE Cultivator's LENS Hands-On Evaluation

  • You are powering large ponds or tall waterfalls because mid-sized pumps lose too much flow at higher head pressures
  • You are building out a massive irrigation system because your current hardware creates bottlenecks that slow down throughput

  • The rotatable outlet is a lifesaver when you are trying to align plumbing in a tight pump vault
  • We keep this model in stock because the silicon carbide shaft holds up way longer than cheaper plastic alternatives

  • Owners of tall water features say they finally get the pressure they need to keep waterfalls looking full
  • Users managing large hydroponic reservoirs say the quiet operation makes a huge difference in shared workspaces

Vivosun 220W Submersible Water Pump (4500GPH)

Bigger ponds and taller waterfalls need more than a mid-size pump can deliver. Once the head height climbs, flow slows to a trickle. The Vivosun 220W Submersible Water Pump (model PG4500-S) is sized for these larger features. It pushes up to 4,500 GPH, still moves 1,783 GPH at 9.8 ft of head, and reaches a maximum lift of 19 ft. It runs at a quiet 30–40 dB.

The pump's 1-1/2″ inlet and outlet accept 1-1/4″ or 1-1/2″ ID tubing, which keeps friction loss low on long runs to a waterfall or filter. Inside, a wet rotor/wet bearing motor runs cool, and a silicon carbide ceramic shaft and drive ring resist wear. The IPX8-rated housing handles continuous submersion. A removable pre-filter screen keeps large debris away from the impeller, and five outlet positions from 0° to 180° let you aim the discharge to match your plumbing.

The Vivosun 220W Submersible Water Pump fits ponds up to roughly 720 gallons. It can run submerged or inline in dry installations to power fountains, streams, filtration systems, large hydroponic reservoirs, and irrigation lines. A 20.3 ft (6.2 m) cord and built-in carry handle simplify placement. The pump is designed for fresh water only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose the 220W or the 120W Vivosun pump? +

Choose the 220W model for ponds up to about 720 gallons or waterfalls over 10 ft. It delivers 4,500 GPH with a 19 ft max head, compared with the 120W model's 2,700 GPH and 15 ft. For smaller ponds and fountains, the 120W model uses less power.

How high can this pump push water and still give good flow? +

The Vivosun 220W Submersible Water Pump delivers about 2,814 GPH at 6.6 ft and 1,783 GPH at 9.8 ft. It still moves 951 GPH at 13.1 ft. See the Flow Rate by Head Height table above to match it to your outlet height.

Can I connect it to a pond filter or use it inline? +

Yes. The pump works with filter systems and can run submerged or inline in a dry installation. Use 1-1/4″ or 1-1/2″ ID flexible tubing with the included insert fittings.

How do I point the outlet in a different direction? +

With the pump flat on its base, rotate the pump body within the handle/stand and lock it at Notch A, B, or C for the middle three positions. For the far-left or far-right positions, remove the impeller chamber cover and rotate it by hand. The user manual shows each position.

How do I keep the impeller clean? +

Unplug the pump and twist the impeller chamber cover counter-clockwise to remove it. Hose debris out of the chamber and off the impeller, then check the inlet screen for clogs before reinstalling.

Is this pump safe for saltwater or sandy water? +

No. It's built for fresh water only. Sand and extra-fine grit can damage the water-lubricated rotor assembly, so position the pump off the pond bottom or behind a pre-filter.

What if the pump won't start? +

Check the circuit breaker, then try a different GFCI outlet to confirm power. If it still won't run, inspect the discharge, tubing, and inlet screen for blockages. Make sure the impeller spins freely by hand with the cover removed.
