Who This Is For

  • You are exhausting air from a medium grow tent because you need to keep odor from escaping into your living space.
  • You are choosing a terminal filter because you have enough room inside the tent to keep the duct run simple.

What We Found

  • The 1.8 inch carbon bed thickness is a sweet spot for removing scent without creating too much backpressure.
  • We like that the powder-coated aluminum construction avoids the rust issues we see on cheaper steel housings.

What Users Say

  • Users who matched this to a 6 inch fan say they maintained strong negative pressure throughout their entire cycle.
  • Growers report that they stopped noticing any scent outside the tent as soon as they installed this at the end of their duct run.

Active Air 6" x 16" Carbon Filter - 400 CFM

Odor control is non-negotiable in any serious grow operation, and the Active Air 6" x 16" Carbon Filter is built to handle up to 400 CFM of air volume while eliminating the full spectrum of VOCs that escape an active garden. Loaded with virgin activated Australian granular carbon — one of the most adsorbent carbon grades available — this filter traps odor molecules on a micro-porous surface rather than simply masking them. If your environment requires a larger filtration capacity, the Active Air 6" x 24" inline carbon filter is an excellent alternative for higher volume spaces.

The machine-packed carbon bed measures 1.8" deep, ensuring consistent density and airflow throughout the filter's life. Powder-coated aluminum tops and bases keep weight low without sacrificing durability, and the included pre-filter protects the carbon bed from particulate buildup to extend service life up to two years under typical environmental conditions.

Features

🌿
Virgin Australian Granular Carbon

Loaded with high-grade virgin activated Australian carbon — among the most adsorbent sources available — for maximum VOC and odor elimination.

💨
400 CFM Airflow Rating

Rated for up to 400 CFM, making this filter a strong match for the Active Air 6" inline duct fan in medium to large grow tents and rooms.

📐
1.8" Carbon Bed Depth

Machine-packed 1.8" carbon bed ensures uniform density and consistent contact time between air and carbon for thorough odor adsorption.

🛡️
Included Pre-Filter

Pre-filter sleeve catches dust, hair, and particulates before they reach the carbon bed, extending the filter's effective lifespan.

🏗️
Powder-Coated Aluminum Construction

Aluminum tops and bases with powder-coat finish keep the unit lightweight while resisting corrosion in humid grow room conditions.

📅
Up to 2-Year Filter Life

Expected service life of up to two years depending on environmental conditions — one of the longer-rated lifespans in its class for carbon grow filters.

FAQ

What size inline fan should I pair with this carbon filter? +

This filter is rated for 400 CFM and uses a 6" attached flange, so it pairs directly with the Active Air 6" Inline Duct Fan - 400 CFM. Running a fan that exceeds the filter's CFM rating will push air through the carbon too quickly for full odor adsorption — match or slightly underrate your fan for best results.

Why does carbon source matter — what makes Australian carbon better? +

Australian granular carbon is widely regarded in the industry for its high surface area and micro-pore density, which directly determines how many odor molecules the carbon can capture per gram. Virgin (unused, non-recycled) carbon ensures the full adsorption capacity is available from day one rather than being partially spent from prior industrial use.

Should the carbon filter be installed on the intake or exhaust side of the fan? +

Carbon filters are designed to work on the intake side of an inline fan — air is pulled through the carbon bed before passing through the fan and out of the space. To complete your ventilation setup, we recommend using Active Air premium ducting for a secure, airtight connection. Pushing air through the filter is possible but generally less efficient.

How do I know when the carbon filter needs to be replaced? +

The most reliable indicator is odor breakthrough — when you begin to detect grow room smells outside your exhaust, the carbon bed is saturated and needs replacement. Under typical conditions this occurs within one to two years, though running at maximum speed continuously will shorten that window.

What does the pre-filter do, and does it need to be replaced separately? +

The pre-filter sleeve wraps the outside of the carbon filter and catches dust, hair, and other airborne particulates. Keeping the pre-filter clean is essential; you can find a replacement Active Air pre-filter if your original sleeve becomes too clogged to wash and reuse.

Can high humidity in my grow room damage the carbon filter? +

Yes — sustained high humidity (above 70% RH) is a primary factor that shortens carbon filter life. Maintaining proper humidity levels, monitored with an Active Air Hygro-Thermometer, will help you get the most out of the filter's rated two-year lifespan.
