Jump Start Digital Temperature Controller for Heat Mats

Analog heat mat controllers leave root-zone temperatures to chance — a problem when specific crops require consistent, dialed-in warmth to germinate reliably. The Jump Start Digital Temperature Controller replaces guesswork with precision, offering a controllable range of 68°F to 108°F with a digital readout accurate enough to distinguish between crops with different thermal requirements. Unlike basic on/off mats, this thermostat actively maintains your set temperature across changing ambient conditions, whether your grow space runs cold in winter or warm in summer.

The controller works with all Hydrofarm heat mats and is rated for up to 1000W/8.3 amps, making it compatible with single or daisy-chained mat setups—including the 140W Commercial Seedling Heat Mat—within that load. It is also highly effective for managing a Jump Start soil heating cable for precise bench heating. The water-resistant stainless steel probe sits in the growing medium to read actual root-zone temps rather than ambient air, and LED mode indicator lights give you an at-a-glance read on operating status. Temperature display toggles between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and built-in error codes (E1, E2, E3) flag probe issues or out-of-range conditions so problems are caught before they affect your crop.

Features

🌡️
Digital Temperature Control

Precise digital readout with a controllable range of 68°F–108°F lets you dial in the exact root-zone temperature required for your specific crop.

🔩
Water-Resistant Steel Probe

The stainless steel temperature probe is water-resistant and designed to sit directly in the growing medium for accurate root-zone readings rather than ambient air temps.

🌍
°F / °C Toggle

Switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius display modes by pressing the Up or Down button — no tools or menus required.

💡
LED Mode Indicators

Onboard LED indicator lights show operating status at a glance, letting you confirm the controller is actively heating or holding temperature without checking a display.

1000W / 8.3A Capacity

Rated for up to 1000 watts and 8.3 amps via a 3-prong grounded plug, providing sufficient headroom for single or multiple heat mats within the rated load.

🔌
Universal Heat Mat Compatibility

Compatible with all Hydrofarm heat mats, including the full Jump Start lineup such as the 72-cell Hot House kit, making it an easy upgrade for any existing propagation setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this controller work with my existing Jump Start heat mat?+

Yes. The Jump Start Digital Temperature Controller is compatible with all Hydrofarm heat mats, including every mat in the Jump Start lineup. Simply plug your heat mat into the controller's outlet, place the probe in your growing medium, and set your target temperature.

Where should I place the temperature probe?+

Insert the stainless steel probe directly into your growing medium—soil, coco, or AccelaROOT starter plugs—at root level rather than resting it on the surface or leaving it in the air. Root-zone placement ensures the controller responds to actual substrate temperature rather than ambient air, which can vary significantly from what the roots are experiencing.

How do I switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius?+

Press either the Up or Down button on the controller to toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius display modes. No menu navigation or reset is required — the switch is immediate and the display updates instantly to reflect the selected unit.

What do the E1, E2, and E3 error codes mean?+

E1 indicates the temperature has dropped below the controllable range or that the probe has an open circuit (broken connection) — check the probe connection first. E2 means the temperature has exceeded the upper limit of the range. E3 indicates a short circuit in the temperature sensor or probe. For E1 and E3, inspect the probe cable for damage and ensure it is fully seated; for E2, verify your set point and ambient conditions are within the controller's operating range.

Can I run multiple heat mats through this controller?+

Yes, as long as the combined wattage of all connected mats does not exceed 1000W / 8.3 amps. A standard 17W Jump Start heat mat draws well under that limit, so multiple mats can be run through a power strip plugged into the controller's outlet. Always verify total load before connecting multiple devices.

What temperature should I set for seed germination?+

Most vegetable and herb seeds germinate optimally when the root zone is maintained between 75°F and 85°F inside a 72-cell germination station, though optimal temperatures vary by species. Warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and basil tend to prefer the higher end of that range, while cool-season crops like lettuce and kale germinate reliably at lower settings. Refer to your seed supplier's germination guidelines for crop-specific targets.
