This is a transfer pump, not a submersible pump. The pump unit itself must be kept in a dry location, with inlet and outlet hoses running to and from your liquid source.
The included self-priming check valve helps the pump create suction to draw water into the hose on its own, eliminating the need to manually fill the hose with water first. This makes startups much quicker and easier.
