This outer bucket is designed for use with the Active Aqua Grow Flow 5 Gal System and its associated expansion kits. It maintains full compatibility with the system's fittings and tubing connections, drawing nutrient solution from a reliable Active Aqua 2.0 black reservoir to ensure consistent irrigation performance across all sites.

An offset drain fitting leaves a low point in the bucket floor that can retain standing water after each drain cycle — particularly if the bench isn't perfectly level. The centered drain fitting eliminates that low point by positioning the outlet at the geometric center of the floor, ensuring complete drainage whether you are using the ground or an Active Aqua 4x8 rolling bench system.

The aeration channels are structural features built into the outer bucket walls and base that create passive airflow pathways around the root zone between flood cycles. In ebb and flow systems, roots are periodically submerged and then exposed to air — the aeration channels accelerate gas exchange during the dry phase, preventing anaerobic conditions from developing at the base of the media between irrigations. This is particularly important in continuous-run commercial systems where flood frequency is high.

Each outer bucket is sized to hold approximately 13 liters of clay pebbles (expanded clay aggregate) or similar coarse, free-draining hydroponic media. Clay pebbles are the recommended substrate for ebb and flow systems due to their excellent drainage, re-wetting characteristics, and aeration properties. Fine or dense substrates like soil or coco coir are not appropriate for ebb and flow bucket applications as they can impede drainage and clog fittings.

A single Active Aqua Grow Flow controller unit supports up to 24 growing modules — the base 12-site system can be expanded to the full 24-module maximum using Grow Flow Expansion Kits (each adding 12 modules) without requiring a new controller.
