THROUGH THE Cultivator's LENS Hands-On Evaluation

  • You are moving away from bagged soil because you are tired of storing heavy, bulky pallets that eat up your floor space.
  • You are switching to a cleaner medium because your current potting mix compacts and starves the root zone of oxygen.

  • The 15 minute soak time is honest, but you get a much fluffier texture if you break it up by hand as it expands.
  • We recommend rinsing this even though it arrives pre-buffered, especially if you are working with sensitive young starts.

  • Growers who switched to this brick report they no longer struggle with heavy bags that leak dirt across the floor.
  • Users who blend this with existing soil report better drainage and fewer issues with waterlogged containers.

Vivosun 1.4 lb Compressed Coco Coir Brick

Bagged potting mix is heavy, bulky to store, and often compacts into a dense, waterlogged mass that starves roots of oxygen. Poorly rinsed coir brings its own problem: excess salts that build up in the root zone. The Vivosun 1.4 lb Compressed Coco Coir Brick solves both. Each 7.87" × 3.94" × 1.97" brick expands into 2.3 gallons of loose, airy growing medium with 1–2 gallons of water. The coir is rinsed multiple times with fresh water for balanced pH and low EC.

Made from natural coconut husk fiber, the Vivosun Coco Coir Brick has a porous structure that drains freely and provides aeration while still holding water and nutrients where roots can reach them. That balance supports strong root development in seed trays, containers, and garden beds. Use it on its own as a soil substitute, or blend it in to loosen heavy clay and improve drainage.

Preparation takes about 15 minutes. Soak the brick in a large container, stir to break it apart, then mix in organic fertilizer; Vivosun recommends buffering with a cal-mag solution before planting. Compressed bricks store in a fraction of the space of bagged media and are available in 1-, 3-, and 6-packs. They're suited to vegetables, herbs, flowers, microgreens, and even reptile bedding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I expand the Vivosun Coco Coir Brick? +

Place the brick in a large container and add 1–2 gallons of water. Wait 10–15 minutes, then stir and break it apart by hand to speed up expansion. Once it's fully loose and fluffy, it's ready to mix and use.

How much growing medium does one brick make? +

Each 1.4 lb brick expands to about 2.3 gallons. A 3-pack yields roughly 6.9 gallons, and a 6-pack yields about 13.8 gallons, enough for multiple containers or a small raised bed.

Do I need to add anything before planting? +

Vivosun recommends mixing the soaked coir with organic fertilizer and buffering it with a cal-mag solution before use. This prepares the coir to support healthy plant growth from the start.

Can I use coco coir instead of soil? +

Yes. Expanded coir works as a soil substitute on its own or as an amendment blended into existing soil. Mixed into heavy clay, it loosens the structure and improves drainage while still retaining moisture.

What plants can I grow in it? +

The Vivosun Coco Coir Brick suits vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, and microgreens, indoors or outdoors. It's also a good choice for seed germination, since the loose, moisture-retentive texture supports developing roots.

Can I use it as reptile bedding? +

Yes. Once expanded, the soft, natural coconut fiber makes a comfortable substrate for reptile enclosures, in addition to its gardening uses.
