THROUGH THE Cultivator's LENS Hands-On Evaluation

  • You are switching to bulk coco bricks because the cost of shipping pre-bagged soil keeps inflating your project budget.
  • You are moving away from small, individual bricks because your current workflow of soaking and mixing batch after batch consumes too much of your time.

  • The low EC level is the real benefit here because it saves you from having to flush out excess salts before you even start.
  • We recommend breaking this block in a large trash can or mixing tub to manage the sheer volume once it hits the water.

  • Growers who switched to these blocks for raised beds say they cut their soil prep time by half compared to using smaller bricks.
  • Users who were worried about salt buildup report that their plants look more consistent since switching to this rinsed medium.

Vivosun 11 lb Compressed Coco Coir Block - Low EC

Filling raised beds, large containers, or a full grow run with small coir bricks means soaking and breaking apart batch after batch. The Vivosun 11 lb Compressed Coco Coir Block does the same job in one step. A single 11.8" × 11.8" × 5.9" block expands into 18 gallons of loose, ready-to-mix growing medium, about eight times the output of a standard 1.4 lb brick.

The Vivosun 11 lb block is made from natural coconut husk fiber and rinsed multiple times with fresh water for balanced pH and low EC, which helps prevent salt buildup in the root zone. Its porous fiber structure drains freely and keeps roots oxygenated while holding water and nutrients within reach. That makes it a reliable base for bulk potting mixes, as well as an amendment that loosens heavy clay soil and improves drainage across garden beds.

Expanding the block takes 9–11 gallons of water and a container large enough for the full 18 gallons. Once expanded, mix in organic fertilizer and buffer with a cal-mag solution before planting. Compressed, it stores in a fraction of the space of bagged media, so you can keep it on hand until the next bed refresh, transplant, or grow cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 11 lb block compare to the 1.4 lb brick? +

The 11 lb block expands to 18 gallons, while a 1.4 lb brick yields about 2.3 gallons. One block gives you roughly the volume of eight small bricks, making it the better fit for raised beds, large containers, and bulk potting mixes.

What size container do I need to expand it? +

Use a container that can hold at least 18 gallons, since that's the block's fully expanded volume. You'll add 9–11 gallons of water, so leave room for the coir to swell as it absorbs.

Why should I buffer coco coir with cal-mag? +

Vivosun recommends buffering the expanded coir with a cal-mag solution before use. Along with mixing in organic fertilizer, this prepares the coir to support healthy plant growth from the first watering.

Can I mix it into garden soil? +

Yes. The expanded coir works as a standalone soil substitute or as an amendment. Blended into heavy clay, it loosens the soil structure and improves drainage while still retaining moisture for roots.

What else can I use it for? +

Beyond potting mixes and garden beds, the Vivosun 11 lb block works for seed germination and for growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, and microgreens, indoors or out. The soft, natural fiber also makes comfortable bedding for reptile enclosures.
