Who This Is For

  • You are upgrading to a sealed system because your DIY bucket lids keep leaking and making a mess on the floor.
  • You are choosing individual buckets because multi-site systems are too difficult to clean and sanitize between crops.

What We Found

  • The 8-inch basket is larger than most, giving you much more stability when growing top-heavy plant material.
  • The bucket seals are genuinely watertight, which is a relief compared to the leaking issues common in DIY builds.

What Users Say

  • Growers who switched from soil say they noticed much faster growth cycles and thicker stalks in the first month.
  • Buyers who used to struggle with nutrient burn say the water-based system makes it easier to correct errors quickly.
  • Customers using these in small tents say the all-in-one design saved them from buying separate irrigation parts.

Active Aqua Root Spa 5 Gallon Bucket Deep Water Culture System

Want explosive root growth and faster-growing plants without complicated setup? The Active Aqua Root Spa brings the power of deep water culture hydroponics to your grow space with a simple, all-in-one system that beginners can master in minutes.

This five-gallon bucket system is designed for growing larger plants while maintaining a cost-effective setup that optimizes plant growth. While this is a single-bucket DWC, those looking for larger-scale automation might prefer an ebb and flow hydroponic system. Unlike traditional soil growing, the Root Spa delivers oxygen-rich nutrient solution directly to the roots 24/7, resulting in significantly faster growth rates and healthier plants.

The Root Spa promotes vigorous root development through its included air pump that continuously oxygenates your nutrient solution. The leak-proof design ensures a clean, controlled growing environment without spills or mess. Compatible with various hydroponic growing mediums like clay pebbles, perlite, rockwool, or coco chips, you have complete flexibility to customize your setup.

Everything arrives ready to assemble—no special tools required. Simply fill the bucket with nutrient solution, add your growing medium to the 8-inch basket, connect the air pump, and you're ready to grow. Once the water starts bubbling, your deep water culture system is operational.

Media sold separately: You can use your choice of hydroponic media, such as clay pebbles, #4 perlite, rockwool mini cubes, coco chips, etc. Since this is a hydroponics system, soil should be avoided. Soil may contain dust, fungi, and bacteria, all of which can contaminate a hydroponics system.

FAQs

What is deep water culture (DWC) hydroponics?+

Deep water culture is a hydroponic method where plant roots are suspended in oxygen-rich nutrient solution. The air pump continuously bubbles air through the water, providing roots with abundant oxygen while they absorb nutrients. This results in faster growth rates compared to traditional soil growing.

Do I need to buy growing medium separately?+

Yes, growing medium is sold separately. We recommend clay pebbles (hydroton) for beginners as they're reusable and provide excellent drainage and aeration. Other options include #4 perlite, rockwool mini cubes, or coco chips. Never use soil in hydroponic systems as it can contaminate your reservoir.

How often do I need to change the nutrient solution?+

Change the complete nutrient solution every 1-2 weeks, depending on plant size and growth rate. For easier management of large volumes, consider using a 55 gallon reservoir drum. Between changes, top off with fresh water or diluted nutrient solution as the water level drops. Always monitor pH (maintain 5.5-6.5) and EC/PPM levels for optimal results.

What size plant can I grow in the Root Spa?+

The 5-gallon Root Spa is ideal for growing one medium to large plant. The 8-inch basket provides ample space for substantial root development. For growing multiple plants at once, consider larger setups like the Active Aqua Root Spa 4 Bucket System or the even larger 8 Bucket System.

Does the air pump need to run 24/7?+

Yes, the air pump should run continuously 24 hours a day. Constant aeration is critical in DWC systems—if the air pump stops for extended periods, roots can quickly suffocate and develop root rot. Consider having a backup air pump on hand for emergencies.

How do I prevent algae growth in my reservoir?+

Keep the bucket covered to block light—algae needs light to grow. The opaque bucket and lid design help prevent this. Also maintain proper reservoir temperatures (65-72°F), change nutrient solution regularly, and consider using beneficial bacteria products to outcompete algae.

Can I use tap water in the Root Spa?+

You can use tap water if it's suitable for your area. Let tap water sit for 24 hours to allow chlorine to evaporate, or use a dechlorinator. If your tap water has high mineral content (hard water), you may need to adjust nutrient dosages accordingly. Filtered or RO water gives you the most control.

What temperature should I maintain in the reservoir?+

Maintain reservoir temperatures between 65-72°F (18-22°C) for optimal oxygen levels and root health. Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen and can promote root diseases. If temperatures rise above 75°F, consider using an Active Aqua 1/2 HP Chiller or frozen water bottles to cool the solution.
