The Active Air 3-Way Meter adds a light intensity reading (0–2000 LUX) on top of moisture and pH, making it the better choice if you also want to monitor your grow light coverage or natural sunlight levels. The 2-Way Meter focuses purely on soil conditions and is ideal if light monitoring isn't a priority.

No — the meter is entirely battery-free. It generates the small electrical signal needed for readings through direct contact with the soil, so there's nothing to charge or replace before use.

Use the selector switch on the meter body to toggle between moisture and pH modes. Insert the probe into your growing media, select the desired mode, and read the result directly from the analog dial — no warm-up or calibration required.

The 2-Way Meter covers pH 3–10, while the 3-Way covers pH 3.5–8. The wider range on the 2-Way makes it slightly more useful in situations where soil may be unusually alkaline — such as certain outdoor or native soils — though most cultivated growing media will fall well within both meters' ranges.

Remove the probe from the soil after every use and wipe the metal prongs clean with a damp cloth. Leaving the probe inserted between uses causes mineral buildup and oxidation on the contacts, which degrades reading accuracy. Store the meter dry when not in use.

The 2-Way Meter is optimized for soil and peat-based growing media. In inert soilless substrates like dry coco coir, rockwool, or hydroton, readings may be inconsistent because these materials don't hold the ionic charge the probe relies on. For hydroponic or soilless systems, a liquid pH pen is the more reliable tool.
